    "En Compradore. (Mægler)". ("A Compradore. (broker).") [A native manager of European business houses in East and South East Asia.] From a series called "China and Chinese". Hand-coloured studio portrait of a Chinese man standing next to a table with various equipment, an urn at the floor and plants or trees in pots on both sides. Chinese inscription on the wall. Traditional Chinese characters: 語總詩情 Simplified Chinese characters: 语总诗情 English translation: the singing (of birds) give forth poetic beauty. This must be a part of a famous couplet 水色山光皆画本,花香鸟语总诗情, which means: The landscape of rivers and mountains are always the spirit of painting, while the singing of birds and fragrance of flowers give forth poetic beauty. The "Trade mark", a snake on a tree, is that of York & Son, a lantern slide producer in England, c. 1870-1907.

One man is standing below a banana tree in the garden, three men are at the ground level of the building and four men are standing on a balcony. A banner with Chinese characters is hanging on one of the pillars. It has this text: 曠爽能容四面風 (旷爽能容四面风), kuang shuang neng rong si mian feng, "A spacious and bright (building/heart) holds winds from all directions".     "Förste gatekapel i Changsa". "Kapel i Sjangsa". (" First street chapel in Changsha". "Chapel in Sjangsa"). Scrolls with Chinese inscriptions are hanging on the walls. The two on the side walls have not been indentified. The far left has this text: 有這物然後有萬物 (有这物然后有万物), you zhe wu ran hou you wan wu, "There is God (The Thing), and then there are all creatures.". The main scroll in the middle has this text: 上帝憐愛世人甚至將他的獨生子賜給他們叫凡信他的不至滅亡必得永生 約翰三章十六節 (上帝怜爱世人甚至将他的独生子赐给他们叫凡信他的不至灭亡必得永生 约翰三章十六节), shang di lian ai shi ren shen zhi jiang ta de du sheng zi ci gei ta men jiao fan xin ta de bu zhi mie wang bi de yong sheng yue han san zhang shi liu jie, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) [ESV]". The couplet has this text, from right to left: 信真教莫怕旁人笑, xin zhen jiao mo pa pang ren xiao, "Believe in the true God and do not fear any ridicule from others", 存私心須須防上帝知 (存私心须防上帝知), cun si xin xu fang shang di zhi, "whoever has a selfish heart must be aware that God knows all things." The scroll to the far right has this text: 大千世界豈自?來 (大千世界岂自?来), da qian shi jie qi zi ? lai, "Is the boundless universe from (?)". The far right and the far left scrolls are a couplet, explaining that the creation is from God, not from [anything else or any other or false god].

Two men have an inscription on their uniform: 親 兵 (亲兵), qin bing, "bodyguard". In front of the table two kneeling men are seen from behind. The tablet between them has this text: 聽審 (听审), ting shen, "hearing/trial".
